Syzygium wagapense is an endemic shrub or big tree of New Caledonia largely distributed in Grande Terre as well as in Belep islands, Loyalty Islands (Maré and Ouvéa) and Ile des Pins. This species is abundant and it is found in dense humid forest and shrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic rocks up to 600 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 48,836 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 184 km², S. wagapense has no apparent threat, and is not thought to approach the requirements for listing as threatened. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. wagapense is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed in Grande Terre as well as in Belep islands, Loyalty Islands (Maré and Ouvéa) and Ile des Pins.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.
Habitat
S. wagapense occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic rocks up to 600 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires, myrtle rust ((Austropuccinia psidii) and mining activities at Goro and Tiebaghi.
Conservation
S. wagapense is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in three protected areas: Rivière bleue, Foret Nord, Forêt de Saille and Parc des Grandes Fougères.
