Sphaeropteris intermedia is an endemic tree fern of New Caledonia, which can grow above 20 meters, widespread across Grande Terre from Mandjélia in the north to Forêt Nord in the south. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary and ultramafic substrate, at an altitudinal range of 40-600 m asl. This species does not seem globally threatened. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) respectively equal to 11,288 and 128 km², Sphaeropteris intermedia is considered Least Concern (LC).

Conservation


Sphaeropteris intermedia is protected by legislation in Province Sud and occurs in eight protected areas: Vallée de la Thy, Foret Nord, Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Aoupinié, Mont Mou, Haute Yaté, Rivière Bleue.
