Dendrobium oppositifolium is an endemic orchid of New Caledonia, widespread in Grande Terre and in île des Pins. D. oppositifolium occurs in dense humid forest, on forest edges, in open shrubland and also in forest composed by Nothofagus sp. at an altitudinal range 180-1,190 m. asl. With an area of occupancy and an extent of occurrence equal to 316 and 13,400 km² respectively, D. oppositifolium qualifies as Least Concern.

Population


Based on informations from experts, there are around ten individuals within a station.

Habitat


D. oppositifolium occurs in dense humid forest, on forest edges, in open shrubland and also in forest composed by Nothofagus sp. at an altitudinal range 180-1,190 m. asl.

Threats


As D. oppositifolium is a pretty orchid, this species could be threatened by orchidophile.

D. oppositifolium is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud and occurs in numerous protected areas : réserve de nature sauvage du Mont Panié, Réserve de nature sauvage du massif de l’Aoupinié, réserve naturelle de la Nodéla, Parc des Grandes Fougères, réserve naturelle du Mont Do, réserve naturelle de la forêt de Saille, réserve naturelle du massif du Kouakoué, réserve naturelle du Mont Mou, réserve naturelle de la Vallée de la Thy, Parc provincial de la Rivière Bleue, réserve naturelle du Pic du Pin.
