Sphaeropteris novaecaledoniae is an endemic tree fern of New Caledonia, which can grow above 10 meters, widespread across Grande Terre from Pouébo in the north to Rivière Bleue in the south. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary and ultramafic substrate, at an altitudinal range of 150-1,300 m asl. This species does not seem globally threatened. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) respectively equal to 10,543 and 228 km², Sphaeropteris novaecaledoniae is considered Least Concern (LC).

Sphaeropteris novaecaledoniae is protected by legislation in Province Sud and occurs in five protected areas: Vallée de la Thy, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Mont Panié, Barrage de Yaté, Aoupinié.
