It occurs in humid forest, shrubland or savana at an altitudinal range 100-1,200 m asl. This species does not seem globally threatened. Gonatostylis vieillardii is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Michel 38 (SMT), Koniambo (KNS), Kopeto (SLN) or bushfires (Boulinda).
