Gonatostylis vieillardii is an endemic terrestrial orchid of New Caledonia, widespread in Grande Terre, from Pouébo in the north to Pic du Grand Kaori in the south of Grande Terre. It occurs in humid forest, shrubland or savana at an altitudinal range 100-1,200 m asl. This species does not seem globally threatened. Gonatostylis vieillardii is considered Least Concern (LC).

Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Michel 38 (SMT), Koniambo (KNS), Kopeto (SLN) or bushfires (Boulinda).
