in Southern Province , in Northern ProvinceBurretiokentia dumasii is a solitary, subcanopy tree palm, endemic of New Caledonia restricted in Nodéla Valley on the Mé Maoya in the west central part of Grande Terre. Basselinia dumasii occurs in dense humid forest on soils derived from ultramafic rocks from 510-670 m asl. Recent survey indicates a population estimated to be over 500 mature individuals. It has an area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) both equal to 4km² and the number of locations is estimated to two (due to the fact that the population is unevenly impacted by invasive species). Main identified threats are linked to rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) grazing, habitat damage by wild pigs and possible seeds destruction by rats. Basselinia dumasii is considered Endangered (EN) B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with a decline of the quality of habitat and number of mature individuals.
Geographical area
Burretiokentia dumasii is an endemic palm tree of New Caledonia where it is known from one population restricted on the Mé Maoya massif on Grande Terre (réserve de la Nodéla)
Population
The population size is estimated over 500 mature individuals.
Habitat
Burretiokentia dumasii occurs in dense humid forest on soils derived from ultramafic rocks from 510-670 m asl.
Threats
Main identified threats are linked to rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) grazing, habitat damage by wild pigs and possible seeds destruction by rats.
Conservation
Burretikentia dumasii is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud and it occurs in one protected area: Nodela. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions as well as invasive species control. Prospection on this species in the other parts of the valley is recommended. Listing of the species in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is recommended.
