in Northern ProvincePlanchonella wakere is an endemic tree of New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, as well as the Bélep islands. It occurs in dense humid forest or shrubland on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 950 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 13,435 and 428 km², respectively. Therefore, P. wakere is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
P. wakere is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, from Cap N'Dua to Col d'Amoss, as well as the Bélep islands.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.
Habitat
This tree grows in dense humid forest or shrubland on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 950 m asl.
Threats
Although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires or mining activities (Goro, Kouaoua, Kopéto, Koniambo), this species does not appear to be threatened.
Conservation
P. wakere is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in numerous several protected areas: massif du Kouakoué, Vallée de la Thy, Montagne des Sources, Barrage de Yaté, pic du Grand Kaori, Forêt Nord and Cap N'Dua natural reserves, as well as the Rivière Bleue and Côte Oubliée provincial parks.
