Planchonella kuebiniensis is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest or shrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 1,020 m asl. Some subpopulations are impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires, animal invasives (Rusa deer) or mining activities, but globally this species is common and does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 8,849 and 300 km², respectively. Therefore, P. kuebiniensis is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


P. kuebiniensis is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, from Goro to the Koniambo massif.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.

Habitat


This shrub or tree grows in shrubland or dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,020 m asl.

Threats


Although some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities (Goro, Kouaoua, Koniambo), bushfires or invasive species (Rusa deer, Rusa timorensis), this species is common does not appear to be threatened.

Conservation


P. kuebiniensis is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in numerous protected areas: Forêt de Saille, Mt. Do, Massif du Kouakoué, Mt. Mou, Haute Yaté, Barrage de Yaté, Forêt Cachée, Pic du Grand Kaori and Forêt Nord natural reserves, as well as the Rivière Bleue and Côte Oubliée provincial parks.
