Q. major is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate from 100 to 1,350 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 6,590 and 160 km², respectively. Therefore, Q. major is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


This species is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered, but wide distribution across Grande Terre, from Plaine des Lacs to Farino and from the Boulinda massif to Pic Kaala.

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


This tree grows in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate (or rarely volcano-sedimentary) from 100 to 1,350 m asl.

Threats


Although some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities (Goro (Vale), Camp des Sapins (SLN), Vulcain (SMGM)), this species does not appear to be threatened.

Conservation


Q. major is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and occurs in numerous protected areas: Forêt de Saille, Mt. Humboldt, Massif du Kouakoué, Mt. Mou, Vallée de la Thy, Montagne des Sources, Pic du Grand Kaori and Pic du Pin natural reserves, as well as the Grandes Fougères, Rivière Bleue and Côte Oubliée provincial parks.
