Sphenostemon comptonii is an endemic tree of New Caledonia, restricted to the Panié massif in northern Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 600-1,500 m asl. The main impact identified comes from vegetation degradation caused by invasive species (feral pig and Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis)). Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 24 and 83 km², while the number of locations are estimated to be 6. Sphenostemon comptonii is therefore assessed as Vulnerable (VU) with criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with a continuing decline of habitat quality.

Conservation
Unprotected species by legislation, it occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié. It is recommended to confirm the presence of this species in Tchingou by collecting an herbarium sample.
