It is found in dense humid forest on an ultramafic substrate at an altitude of 150-600 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. A. austrocaledonicus is considered Least Concern (LC).

Acropogon austrocaledonicus is an endemic small tree of the south part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia (Dumbéa, vallée de la Thy, Rivière Bleue, forêt démazure/Mouirange, Nodela, Forêt de Saille).
Population
Population size is unknown but seems stable. It is found as isolated individuals.
Habitat
This species is found in dense humid forest on an ultramafic substrate at an altitude of 150-600 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem directly threatened. Mining activities as well as bushfires do not impact this species.
Conservation
Protected species by legislation in Province Nord but not in Province Sud, A. austrocaledonicus is also found in protected areas (Réserves naturelles de Nodela, de la Forêt de Saille, Parcs provinciaux de la Haute-Dumbéa et de la Rivière Bleue).
