Gymnostoma intermedium is a small endemic tree from New Caledonia where it has a scattered distribution from Yaté to Tchingou massif. It occurs in dense humid forest or shrubland on ultramafic substrates from 300 to 900 m asl. This species does not seem to be threatened by bushfires as it seems to regenerate after fires. Some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities, but the impact of this threat is not thought to be significant at the moment. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 4,978 km² and 44 km², respectively. G. intermedium is precautionarily listed as Near Threatened (NT), close to meeting the conditions for threatened under criteria B1ab (iii)+2ab(iii) with the number of locations uncertain based on the limited impact of threats.

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.

Conservation

Gymnostoma intermedium is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in three protected areas: Massif du Kouakoué, Montagne des sources, Côte Oubliée.
