Red List Status -

Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 08/09/2017

Oxera sulfurea is a small tree or sometimes woody climber endemic to New Caledonia. It is largely distributed on Grande Terre, as well as the Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins) and the Loyalty Islands (Maré, Lifou). It is quite common and occurs in dense humid or mesophilic forest on calcareous and volcano-sedimentary substrate from 5 to 300 m asl. It has an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 42,750 km² and a minimum Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 168 km², but it does not appear to be significantly threatened at the moment. Therefore, Oxera sulfurea is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area

O. sulfurea is endemic to New Caledonia, largely distributed on Grande Terre, the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands (Maré, Lifou).

Population

Population size is unknown, but field observations suggest it is rather abundant with good regeneration in dense humid forests and at Loyalty Islands.

Habitat

Oxera sulfurea occurs in dense humid forest and mesophilis forest on calcareous and volcano-sedimentary substrates at 5-300 m asl.

Threats

This species could be impacted by Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), feral pigs (Sus scrofa), fires, urbanization and agriculture (Pouembout, Poya). However due to its large distribution and its abundance, this species does not appear to be threatened at the moment.

Conservation

This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and does not occur in any protected areas. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis and also in an increasing garden plant in Nouméa.
