Planchonella baillonii is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the southern ultramafic massif of Grande Terre. It occurs in humid forest, shrubland or riverine vegetation on ultramafic substrate up to 200 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 2,144 and 132 km², respectively. Therefore, P. baillonii is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


P. baillonii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the southern ultramafic massif of Grande Terre, from Plain des Lacs to Thio. Anciently observed near Canala and St. Vincent.

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


This shrub grows in low elevation humid forest, shrubland and riverine vegetation on ultramafic substrate up to 200 m asl.

Threats


Although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires or mining activities (Goro, Ouinné), this species does not appear to be threatened at the moment.

Conservation


P. baillonii is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in several protected areas: Haute Yaté, Mt. Humboldt, Chutes de la Madeleine natural reserves, as well as the Dumbéa, Rivière Bleue and Côte Oubliée provincial parks.
