Despite its limited extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, there is insufficient evidence of decline over its range, hence it is listed as Near Threatened (almost qualifies for listing as threatened under criteria B1a and B2a). This could change rapidly if the northern subpopulations are affected by mining activities or if other areas are subject to an increase in fire or changes in rainfall patterns. If this happens an assessment of Endangered would be more appropriate.

Generally found in the understory of dense humid rainforests on ultramafic substrates.

Regeneration is evident in places.

Threats
The Mt. Paéoua population is threatened by fires, as well as potential future mining activities (prospecting has already occurred). It may also be susceptible to impacts of climate change such as shifts in precipitation patterns.
Conservation
This species occurs in two protected areas: Rivière Bleue Provincial Park and Montagne des Sources Nature Reserve. The northen subpopulation at Mt. Paéoua needs to be protected or at least closely monitored, since it is located on an ultramafic massif that is currently being prospected for nickel mining.
