Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 26/01/2018Syzygium arboreum is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed from the southern to the northern part of Grande Terre. This species is quite common and it occurs in dense humid forest on various substrates (volcano sedimentary, ultramafic and basalt), from 160 to 1,512 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 6,345 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 140 km², S. arboreum is not considered threathened and assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. arboreum is endemic to New Caledonia and it is largely distributed from the southern to the northern part of Grande Terre, from Goro to col d'Amos.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.
Habitat
S. arboreum occurs in dense humid forest on various substrates (volcano sedimentary, ultramafic and basalt rocks), from 160 to 1,512 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires (col d'Amos) and mining activities at Goro.
Conservation
S. arboreum is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Aoupinié, Pic du grand Kaori, Foret Nord, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Haute Yaté, Mont Panié, Rivière bleue and Vallée de la Thy. The experts note a high variability in this group and it can also contain multiple taxa that may deserve species-level recognition. This needs to be taken into account in futher potential reseach studies (taxonomic or genetic studies).
