Cloezia buxifolia is a small endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the southern massif of Grande Terre. This species is found in shrubland and open riverine vegetation on ultramafic substrate between 150 and 800 m asl. Known from a dozen locations, its area of occupation (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated at 88 and 553 km², respectively. It is locally abundant and does not seem directly threatened. Therefore, Cloezia buxifolia is listed as Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v).

Geographical area


C. buxifolia is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the southern massif of Grande Terre, from the Kouakoué massif to the Plaine des Lacs.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that the species is quite common and abundant.

Habitat


C. buxifolia occurs in shrubland and open riverine vegetation on ultramafic substrate between 150 and 800 m asl.

Threats


This abundant species does not seem threatened at the moment, although some sub-populations may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires or mining activities (Goro).

Conservation


C. buxifolia is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it does occur in numerous protected areas: Massif du Kouakoué, Forêt cachée, Pic du Pin, Barrage de Yaté, Chutes de la Madeleine, Rivière bleue, Haute Yaté, Montagne des sources.
