in Northern ProvinceTristaniopsis guillainii var. balansana is an endemic shrub or small tree from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre. This taxon occurs in shrubland and dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,200 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 2,572 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 88 km², respectively. This species is quite common and locally abundant and does not seem threatened. Therefore, T. guillainii var. balansana is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
T. guillainii var. balansana is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre, from Plateau de Goro to Nakéty.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is quite common and abundant.
Habitat
T. guillainii var. balansana occurs in shrubland and dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,200 m asl.
Threats
This abundant species does not seem to be threatened at the moment, although some subpopulations may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires and mining activity (Goro (Vale)).
Conservation
T. guillainii var. balansana is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in three protected areas: Mont Do, Barrage de Yaté and Chutes de la Madeleine.
