Although this species' distribution is limited and the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are within the thresholds for Endangered, it is relatively common and shows very limited, if any, decline. It also appears to be able to re-establish after fire, provided that fires are not too frequent. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.
Geographical area
Podocarpus novae-caledonie is restricted to the southern massifs of New Caledonia occurring from 50 to 725 m.
Population
A relatively common species.
Habitat
This species is usually found along watercourses running through maquis shrublands.
Threats
There may be decline in the quality of the habitat due to increasing frequency of fires, but it is not known if this is currently a threat.
Conservation
This species is found within several protected areas in southern New Caledonia.
