Semecarpus atra is a big tree growing up to 20 to 25 m high. This species is widely distributed across the Grande Terre, as well as in Ile des Pins, Belep islands, Yandé and Balabio islets and Loyalty islands (Lifou and Maré). This species occurs in low littoral forests and in areas of "mangrove hinterland" up to 1,000 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 60,996 km² and its area of occupancy (AOO) 216 km², respectively. It is quite common and does not seem threatened. Therefore, Semecarpus atra is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Semecarpus atra is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed across the Grande Terre, as well as in Ile des Pins, Belep islands, Yandé and Balabio islets and Loyalty island (Lifou and Maré).
Population
The population size is not known. Field observations indicate that the species is quite common.
Habitat
This species occurs in low littoral forests and in areas of "mangrove hinterland" up to 1,000 m asl.
Threats
There are no threats identified for this species.
Conservation
Semecarpus atra is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in five protected areas : Parc zoologique et forestier Michel Corbasson, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Vallée de la Thy, Rivière bleue.
