Basselinia sordida is an endemic solitary, subcanopy to emergent tree palm largely distributed and locally abundant from southwest central to northwest central of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. Basselinia sordida occurs in dense humid forest on serpentine soils derived from ultramafic rocks from 1,000 to 1,500 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) respectively equal to 5,233 and 76 km², Basselinia sordida is considered as Least concern (LC).

Population


Population size is not precisely known but census report of the population found dense population per station.

Habitat


Caledonia. Basselinia sordisa occurs in dense humid forest on serpentine soils derived from ultramafic rocks from 1,000 to 1,500 m asl.

Threats


The species does not seem to be threatened although some sub-populations may be impacted by invasive species : destruction of seeds by rats and habitat damage by wild pigs.

Conservation


Protected species by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud, B. sordida is present in four protected areas : Forêt de Saille, Montagne des sources, La Dumbéa, Haute Dumbéa.
