Alstonia lenormandii is a tree growing up to 5-15 m high endemic from New Caledonia. It is restricted to the south of the Grande Terre, from the far south of the Grande Terre to the upper limit at Boulouparis-Ponérihouen area with an observation at Haute Téné at Bourail. It grows in undergrowth forets and in maquis on ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 2 -1,200 m asl. This species does not seem threatened although some subpopulations may be impacted by woodworking in the past, bushfires and mining activities at Tontouta, Kouaoua, Houailou, Ouinnée and Goro. This species is very common, occurs in several protected areas and it does not seem to be threatened. With an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) and Area of Occupancy (AOO) respectively equal to 6,597 and 780 km², Alstonia lenormandii is considered as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


Alstonia lenormandii is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the south of the Grande Terre, from the far south of the Grande Terre to the upper limit at Boulouparis- Ponérihouen area with an observation at Haute Téné at Bourail.

Population


The population size is not known. Field prospections indicate that the species is very common.

Habitat


Alstonia lenormandii grows in undergrowth forets and in maquis on ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 2-1,200 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem threatened although some subpopulations may be impacted by by woodworking in the past, bushfires and mining activities at Tontouta, Kouaoua, Houailou, Ouinnée and Goro.

Conservation


Alstonia lenormandii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in several protected areas: Rivière bleue, Vallée de la Thy, Chutes de la Madeleine, Côte Oubliée, Forêt cachée, Forêt de Saille, Foret Nord, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources, Mont Mou, Pic du grand Kaori, Pic du Pin.
