Oxera balansae is a long and slender liana endemic to New Caledonia, only known from Ouvéa and Lifou (Loyalty Islands) and the Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins). It is found on the edges or in dense humid forest on calcareous rocks up to 36 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated to be 32 and 5,907 km², respectively, and it is known to occur in three locations. This species does not seem directly threatened and its habitat remains rather protected from the usual threats occurring in New Caledonia. Therefore, O. balansae is listed Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


O. balansae is an endemic species of New Caledonia only known from Ouvéa, Lifou at Loyalty Islands and Ile des Pins.

Population


The population size is unknown but based on field observations, O. balansae is quite common with a good regeneration.

Habitat


O. balansae occurs in dense humid forest or on the edge of humid forest only on calcareous rocks, up to 36 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem globally threatened in its habitat.

Conservation


Oxera balansae is only protected by legislation in Province Sud and it does not occur in any protected areas. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis with only a few number of individuals.
