S. insulae-pinorum is a shrub endemic to New Caledonia, only known from the Oro region on Ile des Pins. It occurs in littoral Araucaria forest at low altittude. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are both equal to 4 km². Main identified threats include habitat degradation by human activities (tourism, littering, logging...) This species is therefore listed as Critically Endangered (CR) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area


S. insulae-pinorum is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is found only on Ile des Pins, in the Oro area.

Population


Only one population at Oro has been identified, its size is probably around 100 individuals.

Habitat


S. insulaepinorum occurs in littoral Araucaria forest at low altitude (50 m asl.) on calcareous rocks.

Threats


The main identified threat is habitat degradation by human activities (tourism, littering, logging).

Conservation


S. insulae-pinorum is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and doesn't occur in any protected areas. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed that monitoring should occur to ensure the persistence of the known population. To ensure the preservation of a viable population, it is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services) and local Management Committee on the presence of the species in the concerned area.
