An endemic geophytic orchid of New Caledonia, Liparis laxa is widely distributed on Grande Terre (main island), predominantly in the extreme south of the island. Two varieties are described : L. laxa Schltr. var. laxa and L. laxa var. pluridentata (Kraenzl.) N. Hallé. L. laxa occurs in shrubland and forest at an altitudinal range from sea level to 1,200 m asl. Despite having an area of occupancy and an extent of occurrence equal to 376 and 12,806 km² respectively, L. laxa is not thought to approach the requirements for listing as threatened, and is listed as Least Concern.

Threats
L. laxa does not seem threatened.
Conservation
Liparis laxa is protected in Province Sud and Province Nord and occurs in numerous protected areas: Réserve Naturelle du Mont Humboldt, Réserve Naturelle du Mont Mou, Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue, Réserve Naturelle de la Haute Yaté, Réserve Naturelle de la Vallée de la Thy, Réserve Naturelle de la Haute Dumbéa, Réserve Naturelle du Pic du Pin, Parc de la Dumbéa, Réserve Naturelle du Barrage de Yaté, Netcha sustainable resource management area, and Réserve Naturelle du Cap N’Dua.
