Alyxia oppositifolia is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the northwestern part of Grande Terre, from Poya to Kaala Gomen. It is found in shrubland on serpentine and calcareous substrates up to 314 m asl. The main identified threats come from mining activities, bushfires and invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis)). Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 120 and 3,038 km², Alyxia oppositifolia is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v) with an estimated decline of all the concerned subcriteria and a number of locations over to be 10.

The population size is not known.

Conservation
Alyxia oppositifolia is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it does not occur in any protected areas.
