Diospyros perplexa is an endemic shrub/tree of New Caledonia. This species is known from the Nouméa area and Pic Ouitchambo where it occurs in dry forest. This species is insufficiently known (few records) by the experts as D. perpexla represents some hybrid forms with D. pancheri. D. perplexa deserves to be more collected in order to enhance the knowledge of this species. Therefore, Diospyros perplexa is therefore assessed as Data Deficient (DD) for taxonomy reasons.

Conservation
This species is legally protected in Province Nord and Province Sud. Prospections are recommended in order to bring further material for taxonomic studies.
