Diospyros yaouhensis is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia spread discontinuously on the west coast of Grande Terre from Pouembout in the north to Nouméa in the south. It occurs in dry forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 0 - 200 m asl. The main impact identified comes from rusa deer (Rusa timorensis). However, this species does not seem globally threatened. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 120 and 4,552 km², Diospyros yaouhensis is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with a decline of habitat quality and a number of locations slightly over 10.

Good regeneration has been observed.

Threats


The main impact identified comes from Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis). However, this species does not seem globally threatened.

Conservation


This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord but not in Province Sud. It does not occur in any legally protected area but it is found in fenced areas (protected against Rusa Deer, Rusa timorensis).
