Elaeocarpus rotundifolius is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it has a wide distribution across Grande Terre, the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands. It occurs in low altitude primary or secondary forest on volcano-sedimentary, ultramafic and calcareous substrate up to 490 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 48,671 and 232 km², respectively. Some subpopulations are impacted by bushfires, urbanization or mining activities but globally the species is not threatened. Therefore, E. rotundifolius is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
E. rotundifolius is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a wide distribution across Grande Terre (from Prony (Yaté) to Col d'Arama (Poum)), the Isle of Pines (île des Pins) and the Loyalty Islands (Ouvéa, Lifou, Maré).

Threats
Some subpopulations are impacted by bushfires, urbanization or mining activities (Nakéty-Edouard, NMC ; Tiébaghi and Plateau de Thio, SLN), but globally the species is not threatened.
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié.
