Cenchrus caliculatus is an autochtonous herb from New Caledonia where it is mainly distributed in the coastal areas of Grande Terre as well as in Loyalty islands (Maré, Lifou, Ouvéa and Tiga) and the islets near by (Entrecasteaux, Matthew and Hunter). This species occurs in littoral habitats on calcareous substrate mainly on sands. It does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 149,094 and 60 km², respectively. Therefore, Cenchrus caliculatus is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is very common.

Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Cenchrus caliculatus is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in one protected area : Mont Mou.
