Ischaemum muticum is an autochtonous herb from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, as well as in Bélep islands and Ile des Pins and Loyalty islands (Maré, Ouvéa, Lifou). It occurs in marshland areas in particular in secondary humid habitat up to 450 m asl. This species is very common and this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 57,584 and 136 km², respectively. Therefore, Ischaemum muticum is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Ischaemum muticum is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected area.
