It occurs in gallery forest edges on calcareous and volcano-sedimentary substrates up to 800 m asl. The main threats to this species are bushfires frequent in the area (north west of the Grande Terre). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 188 and 16 km², respectively, and the number of locations is estimated to be four. Therefore, Ottochloa nodosa is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v) with an estimated continuing decline of the habitat and the number of mature individuals.
