Zoysia matrella is an autochthonous herb from New Caledonia, where it is only known from Kuébini in the south of the Grande Terre, as well as in Ile des Pins and Maré island at Loyalty island. It occurs in littoral habitats in calcareous substrate up to 50 m asl. The species is common and it does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 4,675 and 36 km², respectively. Therefore, Zoysia matrella is listed as Least (LC).
