Hernandia cordigera is an endemic big tree from New Caledonia, growing up to 30 m high and it is commonly called "Bois bleu". It is largely distributed across Grande Terre as well as in Ile des Pins and Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré and Lifou). This species occurs in humid forest on various substrates from the coastal areas up to 1,000 m asl. Its Area of Occupancy (AOO) and an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 444 and 44,102 km² respectively. Although this species was haversted in the past in Grande Terre for joinery wood, it does not seem threatened. It is considered to be a common species in New Caledonia. Therefore it is not thought to approach the conditions for listing as threatened under any criterion and is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Hernandia cordigera is an endemic species from New Caledonia largely distributed across the Grande Terre as well as in Ile des Pins and Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré and Lifou).
Population
Population size is not known but based on field observations, Hernandia cordigera is abondant in coastal areas and forest galleries.
Habitat
Hernandia cordigera occurs in costal areas and forest galleries on various substrates up to 1,000 m asl.
Threats
Although this species was haversted in the past in Grande Terre for joinery wood, it does not seem threatened.
Conservation
Hernandia cordigera is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas : Rivière bleue, Montagne des sources, Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Vallée de la Thy, Aoupinié, Barrage de Yaté, Haute Yaté.
