Xylocarpus rumphii is an autochtonous tree occurring in New Caledonia, where it is only known from a couple of stations in the Loyalty Islands (Lifou and Ouvéa). It grows on calcareous coastlines, its total population in New Caledonia is estimated to be fewer than 250 mature individuals, and potential threats include coastal development and agriculture (copra). Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are both 8 km². Therefore, X. rumphii is locally listed as Endangered (EN) under criterion D.
