Rhamnella vitiensis is an autochtonous tree from New Caledonia largey distributed across Grande Terre mostly in the western coastal areas and it is also present in Loyalty Islands and Néba island. This species occurs in dry forests or degraded and secondary forests at an altitude range of 10 and 250 m asl. This species does not seem to be threatened although some subpopulations can be impacted by Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) (at Nékoro and Tiaoué), bushfires (at Kathepaihié and Oua Tilou) and potential mining activities at Koniambo. Despite having an Area of Occupancy (AOO) and an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 124 and 45,029 km² respectively, Rhamnella vitiensis is considered to be a common species in New Caledonia. It is not thought to approach the conditions for listing as threatened under any criterion and is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Conservation


This autochtonous species is protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in only 2 protected areas : Parc zoologique et forestier Michel Corbasson, Ouen Toro.
