Planchonella lifuana is a tall endemic tree of New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the Loyalty Islands. It occurs in forest on calcareous substrate up to 50 m asl. This species does not seem to be threatened at the moment. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 2,036 and 48 km², respectively. Therefore, P. lifuana is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


P. lifuana is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to Lifou and Maré, in the Loyalty islands archipelago.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that it is rather common in the forest (Butaud 2014).

Habitat


This tall tree grows in forest on calcareous substrate, from coastal cliffs to the interior plateaus up to 50 m asl (Butaud 2014).

Threats


This species does not appear to be threatened at the moment.

Conservation


P. lifuana is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but it does not occur in any protected areas.
