Myodocarpus touretteorum is an endemic shrub restricted to the south of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is confined to the wetlands of Plaine des Lacs. It is found in wetlands and marshes on an ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 200-320 m asl. This species, abundant in the marshes, does not seem directly threatened. Because of its tiny area of occupancy (AOO) estimated to 40 km², Myodocarpus touretteorum is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) close to VUD2.
Geographical area
Myodocarpus touretteorum is an endemic shrub restricted to the south of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is confined to the wetlands of Plaine des Lacs.
Population
This species is abundant in the marshes of Plaine des Lacs.
Habitat
It is found in wetlands and marshes on an ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 200-320 m asl.
Threats
This species, abundant in the marshes, does not seem directly threatened. However, the potential mining industry development in the area (especially in creek Pernod) bears a very serious potential threat. Bushfires contribute as well to the habitat quality degradation.
Conservation
This new species is not legally protected. It is found in two protected areas : réserve naturelle des chutes de la Madeleine, réserve naturelle du barrage de Yaté. The wetlands of Grand Sud were included to the RAMSAR convention list in 2014. If mining activities were developing in Creek Pernod, the red list assessment should be revised quickly.
