Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 21/07/2016Cunonia pterophylla is an endemic shrub/small tree of the southern part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is found in shrubland and dense humid forest at mid and high altitude on ultramafic substrate. This species does not seem globally threatened. Cunonia pterophylla is considered Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Cunonia pterophylla is spread in the southern part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Prony to Nakada.
Population
It is known from 12-15 subpopulations.
Habitat
It is found in shrubland and dense humid forest at mid and high altitude (300-1,200m asl) on ultramafic substrate.
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities (Goro, Camp des Sapins) and bushfires.
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in numerous protected areas : Vallée de la Thy, Foret Nord, Montagne des sources, Haute Pourina, Massif du Kouakoué, Rivière bleue, Haute Dumbéa, Forêt de Saille. This species should be studied for ecological restoration, especially for forest edges reinforcement.
