Syzygium frutescens is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed in Grande Terre. This species is quite common and abondant and it occurs in dense humid forest and scrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic substrate, up to 1,250 m asl. This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 12,648 km² and a minimum area of occupancy (AOO) of 260 km², but it does not appear to be significantly threatened at the moment. Therefore, Syzygium frutescens is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

S. frutescens is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed in Grande Terre

Population


Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common and abundant species.

Habitat


S. frutescens occurs in dense humid forest and scrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic substrate, up to 1,250 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires and mining activies at Ouazangou, Tiebaghi, Kouaoua and Goro.

Conservation


This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Forêt de Saille, Rivière bleue, Foret Nord, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Mont Panié, Massif du Kouakoué, Barrage de Yaté and Pic du grand Kaori.
