Kermadecia pronyensis is an endemic big tree (growing up to 15 m high) from New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the south and the north ouest of Grande Terre. It occurs in forest or shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 50-850 m asl. The main impact identified comes from ongoing mining activites at Goro and Kopeto, future mining activities at Boulinda and bushfires. Its Area of Occupancy (AOO) and Extent of Occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to be 100 and 3,884 km², Kermadecia pronyensis is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v) with an estimated decline of all the concerned subcriteria and a number of locations above 10.
Geographical area
Kermadecia pronyensis is endemic to New Caledonia where it has a scattered distribution across the main island (Grande Terre).
Population
Population size is not known.
Habitat
Kermadecia pronyensis grows in shrubland and in forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 50-850 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem threatened although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires, future mining activities at Boulinda and ongoing activities at Goro and Kopéto.
Conservation
Kermadecia pronyensis is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in 3 protected areas : Aoupinié, Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères.
