Dendrobium odontochilum is an endemic epiphyte orchid of New Caledonia widespread in Grande Terre (main island) and île des Pins. D. odontochilum occurs mostly on shrubland (20-1350 m. asl.)and more rarely on forest edges and thalweg. With an area of occupancy and an extent of occurrence equal to 456 and 15177 km² respectively, D. odontochilum qualifies as Least Concern.

D. odontochilum is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud and occurs in numerous protected areas : réserve de nature sauvage du Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, réserve naturelle du Mont Do, réserve naturelle du Mont Humboldt, réserve naturelle du massif du Kouakoué, réserve naturelle du Cap N’Dua, réserve naturelle de la Haute Yaté, Parc provincial de la Rivière Bleue, réserve naturelle du barrage de Yaté, réserve naturelle des Chutes de la Madeleine, Parc de la Dumbéa.
