Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 22/03/2023Gymnostoma leucodon is an endemic big dense shrub from New Caledonia, where it is distributed in the southern part of Grande Terre, from the far south to the Thio-Tontouta area. This species occurs in riverbed areas or riverbanks on ultramafic substrate up to 250 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 7,474 and 104 km², respectively. Therefore, Gymnostoma leucodon is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Gymnostoma leucodon is endemic to New Caledonia where it is distributed in the southern part of Grande Terre, from the far south to the Thio-Tontouta area.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.
Habitat
This species occurs in riverbed areas or riverbanks on ultramafic substrate up to 250 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this species does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Gymnostoma leucodon is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in three protected areas: Cap N'dua, Côte Oubliée, Rivière bleue.
