Gymnostoma poissonianum is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. This species is common and it occurs in dense humid forest or shrubland on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary substrates up to 900 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 15,219 and 416 km², respectively. Therefore, Gymnostoma poissonianum is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.

Threats
Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires but globally this species does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Gymnostoma poissonianum is unprotected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in numerous protected areas: Parc des Grandes Fougères, Côte Oubliée, Forêt de Saille, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Montagne des sources, Mont Panié, Nodela, Parc zoologique et forestier Michel Corbasson, Rivière bleue.
