Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 09/09/2017Styphelia cymbulae is a common and abundant shrub or small tree, native to New Caledonia, where it is largely distributed from the south to the north of Grande Terre, as well as the Bélep islands and Ile des Pins (Isle of Pines). It occurs on forest borders or in "pioneer" forests up to 1,345 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 20,518 and 820 km². Therefore, S. cymbulae is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. cymbulae is a common and abundant shrub native to New Caledonia, where it is largely distributed from the south to the north of Grande Terre, as well as the Bélep islands and Ile des Pins (Isle of Pines). It is also found in Fiji and Vanuatu.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate a common species that is locally abundant.
Habitat
S. cymbulae is found in shrubland or transitional forests, as well as river banks and forest edges on ultramafic substrate up to 1,345 m asl.
Threats
This species is not globally threatened, although some subpopulations might be impacted by mining activities: Kopéto, Kouaoua, Camp des Sapins, Plateau et Tiébaghi (SLN), Michel 38, Nakéty et Cap Bocage (SMT), Goro (Vale), Vulcain (SMGM), Koniambo (KNS) Ouazangou (NMC).
Conservation
S. cymbulae is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in numerous protected areas: Forêt de Saille, Pic du grand Kaori, Vallée de la Thy, la Dumbéa, Foret Nord, Montagne des sources, Aoupinié, Haute Dumbéa, Rivière bleue, Chutes de la Madeleine, Forêt cachée, Massif du Kouakoué, Mont Humboldt, Mont Do, Ilot de Pam, Haute Yaté, Parc des Grandes Fougères. This species should be collected more, and genetic studies are suggested in order to facilitate species identification within this genus.
