Asplenium novae-caledoniae is an endemic saxicolous fern from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It grows in dry habitat in forest, shrubland or transitional vegetation on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,000 m asl. Although some subpopulations could be impacted by mining activities, this species is common and does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 9,858 and 120 km², respectively. Therefore, A. novae-caledoniae is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


A. novaecaledoniae is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, from Pic du Grand Kaori to Mt. Kaala.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observation indicate that this species is common.

Habitat


This saxicolous fern grows in dry habitat in forest, shrubland or transitional vegetation on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,000 m asl.

Threats


Although some subpopulations could be impacted by mining activities (Plateau de Thio, Camp des Sapins, Koniambo and Goro), this species is common and does not seem to be threatened.

Conservation


A. novae-caledoniae is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in several protected areas: Vallée de la Thy, Pic du Grand Kaori, Massif du Kouakoué, Mont Mou and Nodéla natural reserves, as well as the Côte Oubliée provincial park.
