Melodinus balansae is a big liana or climbing shrub endemic to New Caledonia and widely distributed across Grande Terre. It is known from the far south at Cap NDoua to Poum as well as on Ile des Pins, Art island and Yandé island. It occurs in maquis up to 850 m asl. This species is common and it does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 19,399 and 728 km², respectively. Therefore, Melodinus balansae is listed as Least Concerned (LC).
Geographical area
Melodinus balansae is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It is known from the far south of Grande Terre at Cap NDoua to Poum as well as on Ile des Pins, Art island and Yandé island.
Population
The population size is not known. Field observations indicate a species that is common.
Habitat
Melodinus balansae occurs in maquis up to 850 m asl.
Threats
This species is common and it does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in numerous protected areas: Vallée de la Thy, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources, Pic du grand Kaori, Pic du Pin, Rivière bleue, Cap N'dua, Côte Oubliée, Forêt cachée, Forêt de Saille, Foret Nord, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté.
