Stromatopteris moniliformis is a small endemic fern distributed mostly in the Grand Massif Sud wih an extension to Paéoua and Boulinda in the north ouest of Grande Terre. This species occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland only on ultramafic substrate up to 1,200 m asl. This species is very common and does not seem to be threatened. Therefore with an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 6,287km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 196 km², S. moniliformis is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Stromatopteris moniliformis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is distributed in the southern half of Grande Terre with an extension to Paéoua and Boulinda in the north ouest of Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown but field observations indicate a quite common species.
Habitat
Stromatopteris moniliformis occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland only on ultramafic substrate up to 1,200 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. However, some subpopulations may be impacted by mining acitivities at Goro, Kouaoua, Nakéty) and bushfires(Mouirange, Mont Dore, Creek Pernod, Boid du Sud, Canala (Négropo)).
Conservation
Stromatopteris moniliformis is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Pic du Pin, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources, Barrage de Yaté, Chutes de la Madeleine, Forêt de Saille, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, Vallée de la Thy, Rivière bleue, Mont Do.
