Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 28/11/2018Selaginella vieillardii is perennial herbaceous plant (Hemicryptophyte) endemic of New Caledonia widely distributed in Grande Terre. This species is locally common and abundant and it occurs in dense humid forest up to 300 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 6,371 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 40 km², S. vieillardii does not seem threatened and therefore is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Selaginella vieillardi is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed in Grande Terre, from Mont-Dore to Poum.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
Selaginella vieillardi is a perennial herbaceous plant (Hemicryptophyte) which occurs in dense humid forests on various soils (ultramafic, volcano-sedimentary and calcareous substrate) up to 300 m asl.
Threats
There is no threat identified.
Conservation
Selaginella vieillardii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in two protected areas: Rivière bleue, Haute Yaté. It is recommend to realise field surveys in know areas to collect more biological material and better estimate its population size.
