Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 21/07/2016Cunonia lenormandii is an endemic shrub/small tree of New Caledonia. It is found in shrubland and low forest essentially on ultramafic substrate at high altitude. This species is largely distributed and does not seem directly threatened. Cunonia lenormandii is considered Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Cunonia lenormandii is largely distributed across Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Mont Koghis in the south to Mont Kaala in the north.
Population
This species is quite common. It is known from 10-15 sub-populations.
Habitat
It is found in low forest and shrubland generally on ultramafic substrate at high altitude (800-1,200 m asl).
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities (Kaala, Kopéto, Paéoua, Boulinda, MéMaoya) or bushfires.
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in numerous protected areas : Mont Humboldt, Vallée de la Thy, Massif du Kouakoué, Haute Yaté, Montagne des sources, Rivière bleue, Haute Dumbéa. This species could be used more often in ecological restoration.
